Accordingto McHugh, Snape, Haworth, &amp Carson, (2016), a hobby is describedas an activity that one undertakes on a regular basis during theirleisure time. An individual spends time on his/her hobby for pleasureand relaxation. Hobby is not to be confused with talent although thetwo terms can and are sometimes used interchangeably. Talent isdefined as a natural ability that one is born with and helps them doan activity that seems difficult to other people, better and easily. The difference between the terms is that a hobby is something youlove to do during your spare time while talent is something you aregood at. Activity, however, can be a hobby or a talent. Todemonstrate this, we shall use the example of a common hobby: playingfootball. Someone with a talent in playing football is someone whoplays very well and may even participate in professional footballteams. On the other hand, a hobby in playing football involvesplaying for fun and with friends, and may not necessarily mean thatyou are good at it. A talent can be used as a means to make a livingwhile a hobby is just to pass time. There are many types of hobbiesthat include swimming, reading, watching movies, traveling, cooking, painting, drawing, listening to music, playing and watching footballetc. Basically, any activity can be a hobby. The objective of thispaper is to evaluate the benefits of pursuing a specific hobby. Thepaper will provide an argument for the importance of hobbies inpersonal and professional life by analyzing how specific hobbies canbe applied in real life to aid in human development. It will drawillustrations from the views ofMcHugh,Snape, Haworth, and Carson (2016) in Everydayleisure and happiness in worktown: a comparison of 1938 and 2014.

Accordingto most people`s perspectives, pursuing a hobby is regarded as adistraction from the main activity that they should be engaging in.However McHugh et al., (2016), explain that one of the mainadvantages of taking the time to pursue your hobby is having a quiettime to decompress and as a way of emotional outlet. This enables themind to relax and recharges after a hectic time, as it acts as astress relief and has been known to ease pain. Hobbies preventburn-outs by providing an escape from the workplace associatedproblems.

Whenyou maintain focus on something you enjoy doing without beingdistracted by the outside world, you get an opportunity to discovernew talent and gain new knowledge (McHugh et al., 2016). Engaging inenjoyable activities enhances the brain by stimulating the part thatis associated with creativity and thinking positively. When the brainis stimulated in this way, an individual becomes intellectually andemotionally motivated. So instead of being a distraction from normalactivities, hobbies help the brain to function better andconsequently, you become more capable of handling your daily tasksmore efficiently and effectively.Investing time in a hobby enablesyou to be more focused and energetic in the workplace andsubsequently improves professional performance.

Pursuinghobbies can also help you develop the talents you had forgotten ordid not realize that you have. Channeling your energy towardspositive activities instead of remaining idle is significant inhelping you to focus on the positive aspects rather that the negativesince an idle mind can lead one astray. Positive thoughts assist indeveloping existing skills or learning a new skill. If for example, you have a hobby in swimming, taking time off with your friends for aquick swim to pass off time in the afternoon breaks can enable you todiscover that you are quite a good swimmer. You may find that youalways outdo your friends and they might even confirm that. You mayhave never engaged in competitive swimming before, but you might bemotivated to consider giving it a try once you realize that you areactually a good swimmer. The more you engage in your afternoon hobbyas a means to relax and pass the time, the more you realize you arebetter than your friends in what you do and the more you grow inconfidence as illustrated by McHugh et al., (2016).

Apartfrom realizing your strengths, a hobby also helps you understand yourweaknesses, which is a good thing. Realizing your weakness is astrength that can be applicable in your life. We all have weaknesses, but most of us do not realize them, and it ends up costing us.Without the awareness of your shortcomings, you are not aware of therisks that you may be taking that are beyond your limits. Using thesame example of a hobby in swimming, you might realize that despiteenjoying the hobby in swimming pools and shallow waters, you mightnot be a good swimmer in rivers and fast moving water. You mightregard yourself a good swimmer, but you have only tested yourself inswimming pools. When you decide on a particular day, to go outswimming with your friends at a nearby river, you might be shocked torealize that in these waters, you may not be as good as you and yourfriends thought. The circumstances here are different than in theswimming pools. From experience then, you will understand that youhave a weakness in swimming in rivers and this can go a long way insaving you much trouble in future since you will start training toswim in rivers.

Pursuinga hobby offers a great avenue to socialize and get to meet people whohave similar interests as you. This is significant in buildingconnections, sharing, networking and starting relationships.Interacting with other people with similar tastes and preferences asyou enlightens your life as explained by McHugh et al., (2016).

Justlike a talent, a hobby can be an alternative or primary careeroption. Once you realize you are good at doing what you enjoy doingas a hobby, you can turn it into an income opportunity. This can bethe ultimate rewarding career. Pursuing your hobby with a sense ofpurpose can add value to your life. The swimmer in the previousexamples can choose to pursue a career in swimming. Taking part insporting events can help him/her earn a living if he/she is good inswimming. Even in retirement, a hobby can secure a living. It can beuseful as a retirement plan that apart from helping you financially,it can also keep you active in your old age.

Conclusion
