The article states that bones have theintrinsic capacity to regenerate. Some complex clinical conditionsmay interfere with these processes. Examples of such conditionsinclude trauma, tumors connective tissue malfunctions andhypophosphatasia. The tissue engineering approach which makes use ofMSCs is the best intervention to managing such conditions. Thearticle affirms that current therapies used in treating boneconditions have often failed and are very expensive. It also suggeststhat MSCs can also be used alongside growth factors and platelet-richplasma. If effectively used, this can help improve the healingproperties of MSCs. Other combinations that have indicatedpossibility of good clinical outcomes include the use of MSC withbiomaterials especially when bones need structural support to heal.The article, however, calls for more research into the use of MSCs.The authors believe that with more research, it will be possible touncover other potential uses of MSCs in health care and medicine as awhole. Some of the sourcesof mesenchymal stem cells include articularcartilage, periosteum, synovial membrane, andumbilicalcordon blood and trabecular bone. The article does expound on theprocedures used to obtain mesenchymalstem cells from umbilicalcordon blood and other cells. For example, there have been a lot ofcontroversies regarding the procedures used. Some section of thepopulation has often termed it unethical. They state that use ofumbilicalcordon blood undermines the quality of life.
