Impactof Social Media on Communication and Relationships

Theimpact that the social media has on relationships and communicationis controversial, where different scholars provide contradictingviews. Supporters of the social media argue that it gives theminority groups an opportunity to express themselves (Tufekci, 2012).Those who discourage its application hold that it replaces thetraditional methods that have historically helped people communicateand interact more effectively. This paper will discuss the ideas usedto support the two arguments.

HowSocial Media Ruins Relationships and Communication

Theuse of the social media destroys communication by replacingconversation with connection. These technology-based platforms helppeople establish connections with others in any part of the world(Turkle, 2012). However, parties that connect to each other throughthe social media are not able to benefit from tones and the abilityto get things from the point of view of others (Turkle, 2012).

Similarly, the social media destroy relationships by creating a situation inwhich people become occupied with online chatting. These users of thesocial media avoid face-to-face interaction with other people infamily, work, and academic settings (Turkle, 2012). In addition, thesocial media subject people to the risk of losing important skills(such as the ability to pay attention and maintaining eye contact)required in relationships and communication (Turkle, 2012).

HowSocial Media Enhances Relationships and Communication

Thesocial media should be viewed a solution to obstacles that areimposed by modernity, whereby it helps people relate and communicatewithout sacrificing their busy schedules (Tufekci, 2012). Mostimportantly, the social media improves the communication as well asthe relationship skills of the groups of people (including those whoare shy) that cannot interact with others face-to-face (Tufekci,2012). Moreover, this technology gives individuals who are good atface-to-face commutation an additional platform to express theirminds without replacing the skills that they use to interact inphysical settings.

Conclusion

Althoughthere are scholars who believe that the social media can enhance therelationship as well as the communication skills of the users, it isproven that it facilitates the establishment of connections at theexpense of human interactions. Many users, especially the youngpeople, become pre-occupied with online chatting, which leads to theloss of critical skills that they need for communication as well asrelationships.
