The article titled “” by Healthypeople.gov,informs on why people should exercise on a regular basis. The articleexplains that physical activity does not only improve fitness, butensures that one leads a quality and healthy life. According toHealthypeople.gov (1), many individuals are unaware of thesignificance of engaging in frequent physical activity. Statisticsindicate that above 80% of grownups and youths do not meet the“Healthy People 2020” target (Healthypeople.gov 1). Infact, many adults and adolescents fail to meet the needed guidelinesfor aerobic physical activity, because they rarely participate inmoderate as well as vigorous muscle strengthening.

Currently, there are many diseases that can be reduced by peoplebecoming physically active. These include obesity, diabetes, somecancers and heart diseases (Centers for Disease Control andPrevention 1). Physical activity reduced the risk of prematuredeath, stroke, depression, hypertension and falls (Healthypeople.gov1). The Mayoclinic.org (1) further explains that exercisingregularly improves the quality of life, by making an individual tofeel better. Most interesting is the fact that one’s mood canimprove through physical activity. Frequent exercise boostsconfidence about how one looks and enhances self-esteem.

Despite the quality of life that is obtained from becoming physicallyactive on a regular basis, it is almost impossible for me to exercisedaily. I can attribute this to the perception that a lot of effort isrequired in order to exercise. The thought of exercise results in theassumption that too much effort will be required to ensure that Imaintain physical activity. Also, at times it is not possible toexercise due to lack of time as well as motivation. The time factorinfluences when and how I can exercise. Having to deal with a lot ofschoolwork, means that at times I am too tired to spare time forexercising. Even when I have free time, it is almost impossible tofind a reason to exercise.

The Healthypeople.gov (1) makes it clear that lack of time, motivation, as well as perception about exercise are factors, whichare likely to discourage individuals from becoming physically active. In order to indulge in physical activity, one must spare enough timeto ensure that the exercise is done on a regular basis. It is alsoimportant to have the motivation to exercise. Motivation ensures thatthe physical activity becomes a regular activity. In addition, havinga positive attitude about exercising is very significant. However, Ifeel that these factors take time to be achieved.

Although I do not exercise frequently, I am fully aware of thebenefits of physical activity. On a daily basis, I am able to observethat most of the people in our society are suffering from one illnessor another, which is linked to physical inactivity. The mostobservable condition is obesity. Our country ranks among the firstwith the highest rate of obesity, both in adults, youths andchildren. Bearing in mind that obesity results in the development ofother diseases, I have also observed that most of these individualssuffer from the illnesses outlined by the Healthypeople.gov(1).

Based on personal experience, I have witnessed how some of myrelatives have struggled with illnesses like hypertension anddiabetes. I realize that one is either affected directly orindirectly by failing to exercise. However, most of my family membersare less likely to exercise. Such lack of social support from thefamily has only enhanced my inability to become physically active. Italso means that, I have not had a history of physical activity, whichhas made it difficult to pick up the habit in my youth. I realizethat the family has an influential role in encouraging children topick up habits, like physical activity from a very young age. Oncethe habit is nurtured early, it becomes possible to continueexercising regularly. However, when introduced later in life, it isalmost impossible for one to develop the level of enthusiasm neededto lead a healthy life.

Similar to the suggestions made by the Healthypeople.gov (1),I support the introduction of physical activity programs in learninginstitutions. When the skills are not taught at home, schools cangreatly improve the chances of young people becoming physicallyactive. Also, many people are unaware of how to engage in physicalactivity. This derives from the assumption that physical exerciseought to be vigorous and involve a lot of activities. However, onceinformed, it will become possible to engage even in slight exercise, like walking frequently and reduce the amount of time children spendsitting watching television.

In conclusion, the article on “” provides veryimportant information on why people need to exercise. I realize thatin order to lead a healthy and quality life, I must exercisefrequently. This means that I will have to create time and pushmyself towards becoming physically exercise. I am more concernedabout avoiding most of the illnesses outlined in the article, whichare avoided by leading a physically active life.
