Accordingto Geoffrey Li, there is a very thin line between the public policeroles and the private security personnel. He claims that the policingtask carried out by the public police has overlapped with the privatesecurity firms’ roles. The relationship is described as beingcomplementary, overlapping, and mutually supportive. The authorsuggests that the public police act, in Canada, enforces laws, henceensure peace and calm are maintained in the region. Public police areobligated with other responsibilities such as community support andoutreach programs like crime prevention and drug awareness campaigns.Traditionally, the police have protected public property and spaces. On the other hand, the private security personnel provides servicesclosely related to the police functions work on behalf of theiremployer, and not particularly for the public. Private investigatorshave been performing tasks such as conducting investigations ofmissing persons, provide risk management consultancies, and protectproperty against theft, among others. Security guards have alsomaintained order and peace in public events, protected property andprevented vandalism, and controlled access to certain venues.

Opinion

Inmy informed opinion, it is clear that private security firms areperforming public police officers’ roles. The article describesvarious functions carried out by the security firms, which coincidewith duties of police officers. In the modern world, the publicpolice and private security roles have been separated by a very thinline. However, the main goal and objective between the two groupsremain to be the protection of property and maintain peace and calmin the society. Employment of private security officers has increasedtremendously, surpassing the recruitment of public officers. Theprimary concern between the two is the accountability of theiractions.

Accordingto Tim Tai, there has been an increased rate of the security businessin Columbia, providing armed and unarmed security personnel.According to the finance department, the government has licensed 14firms, with eight companies providing guards for safety purposes. Theincreased number of private security personnel in Columbia can beassociated with the lack of resources to respond to the everdemanding public. officers provide public policefunctions in most of the cases where the police cannot respond tocalls due to engagement in other duties. According to Tai, privateguards are expected to respond to incidences such as noisecomplaints, vandalism, trespassing, and checking fire or burglaralarm. Ordinarily, security guards have provided services that thepublic police are expected to offer to the public. According to thecity records, six private companies have been licensed to carry gunsas a security guard. In such cases, a private guard undertakes awritten and skills tests before being licensed as an armed guard inthe city.

Opinion

Privatesecurity personnel in Columbia have been given the privilege to actand perform police duties. The provision of licenses to securityfirms has given them the mandate to ensure public order and peace.Security guards have also been trained and licensed to carryammunition in the city for the purpose of maintaining security. Therefore, most of the police roles in Columbia have been taken bythe security guards. As aresult, the author recommends various ways through which the industrycan restore public trust. For instance, the industry could link upwith the public police in forming a partnership to ensure the safetyof the citizens. Additionally, the government could review the tasksand responsibilities of the private personnel, thus provide a clearline of duty between the two parties. The author states that privatesecurity guards are ill-trained and have reports indicated a higherwork injury compared to the police.

Opinion

Theexisting relationship between the private security guards and thepublic police officers need to be well exemplified so as to provide aclear distinction of duties. Nevertheless, private security guardsperform tasks designed for the public police. According to theauthor, private guards do not have the skills and ability tocarry out public law enforcement functions. Therefore, it is vital toestablish respective roles and responsibilities of both parties toprevent overlapping of duties.
