Kovner and her colleagues in an articlepublished in the AmericanJournal of Nursing,“discovered that 13% of newly RNs had switched from their jobswithin a year, and 37% more were ready to change theirs,” (as citedin the AmericanAssociation of Colleges of Nursing, n.d).Thus, the shortage of nurses has been caused by lack of interest inthe career and increase in aging of the working class.
Whatis the impact of the nursing shortage on patient care?
Afinding published in the Journalof Advanced Nursingin 2007 indicated that a 10% growth in the amount of baccalaureateprepared nurses was correlated with a decrease in 9 deaths for every1000 discharged patients (as cited in the AmericanAssociation of Colleges of Nursing, n.d).Furthermore, Peter Buerhaus stated that “approximately 75% ofregistered nurses held that nursing shortage presented a greatchallenge in the quality of patient care, their professional life,and the amount of time they did spend with patients,” (as cited inthe AmericanAssociation of Colleges of Nursing, n.d).Thus, the survey revealed that 98 % of RNs felt that shortage ofnurses cause an increase in the rate of stress among them (as citedin the AmericanAssociation of Colleges of Nursing, n.d).Therefore, as a consequence, there is low-quality patient outcome andthe increase in job turnover among nurse.

Tocurb nursing shortage, there have been various initiatives andsolutions from government, hospitals and educational institutions,and nurse associations. It has been proposed that there is a need foradvocating an increase in nurses, funding, partnering with healthcarefacilities and school institutions to curb the problem of nursing.According to research published in the WesternJournal of Nursing Researchin October 2006, it was found out that nurses thought that increasingeducational opportunities, promoting communication with theadministration and creating career ladders for nurses would beefficient and effective in solving the problem of nurse shortage (ascited in the AmericanAssociation of Colleges of Nursing, n.d).Moreover, in Health Affairs, it was found out that in 12 hospitals inU.S. markets, 97% of them were making long term investment ineducation to address the issues of RNs shortage (as cited in theAmericanAssociation of Colleges of Nursing, n.d). Additionally, the individuals in this sector have proposed varioussolutions such as evaluating new models of nursing care, focusing onnursing research and strengthening nursing education programs amongother initiatives.
