Reviewof ‘I Hope You Dance’
‘IHope You Dance’ is a country pop song which was recorded by Ann LeeWomack. Lee is a renowned singer who has made great contributions tothe music industry both within and out of the country. In this song,Lee inspires her audience that there is hope in every challengebecause God will always avail more and better opportunities. Todeliver this message, Lee uses metaphors, symbolism, and idioms.
Leeuses metaphor in different sections of the song. First, she says, “Ihope you never fear the mountains in the distance.” This creates animage of the mountain which simply means hardships and struggles thatpeople go through in life. Besides, she says, “Whenever one doorcloses I hope one more opens.” The image of the door is not literalbecause it symbolizes an opportunity that one gains when one is lost.Lastly, Lee uses another metaphor when she says “I hope you neverlose your sense of wonder, you get your fill to eat but still keepthat hunger.” Here, she uses the image of eating and hunger to meandesire and satisfaction (Leech,2014).
Onthe other hand, Lee uses symbolism as a prominent literary style inher song. In the first place, Lee says, “I hope you still feelsmall when you stand beside the ocean.” Here, the ocean symbolizeshumility and the size of human ego that she compares to an ocean. Also, she says, “Ihope you never fear the mountains in the distance.” The mountain inthe distance is symbolic because it refers to future challenges onemight face in life(Leech, 2014).Finally, symbolism features in the song when Lee says, “Promiseme that you’ll give faith a fighting chance.” This symbolizesthat there is still hope in life no matter how challenging thecurrent situation might be.
Lastly,Lee uses idioms in the song. In the first instance, she says, “Youget your fill to eat but keep that hunger.” This implies that humanbeings are selfish creatures that only care about themselves. At thesame time, she says, “When you come close to selling out, reconsider.” It means that no one should consider quitting, butkeep on trying until one succeeds(Midgley, 2013).Finally, Lee uses idiom when she says,“And when you get the chance to sit it out or dance, I hope youdance.” This idiom means that it is futile to waste anopportunity that one can explore to improve one’s life.
Inconclusion, Lee uses metaphor, idiom, and symbolism to put hermessage across. The use of these devices enabled her to prove thatshe was concerned about delivering the message of hope to thewomanhood. In this song, Lee was committed to explaining to herlisteners that life is quite challenging. However, no matter howdifficult it might be, no one should give up. As she explains, whenone door closes, another opens.
