Self-esteemrefers to how individuals feel or how they value themselves. Theconcept has been considered as a hypothetical construct whichincludes affective, behavioral, and cognitive components. Self-esteemsignifies an element of self-cognition that mirrors an individual’sperceptions about himself/herself (Brown, 2014). The perceptions areusually created through an assessment of one’s personal attributesas well as the internalization of the assessments of others. Indeed,in the modern world, self-esteem has been deemed as the key tohealth, financial success, and personal achievements. Therefore, theidea has been viewed as being significant to the existence ofindividuals. The purpose of this report is to explore the concept ofself-esteem and its importance in adults.

Self-esteemcan be defined in three categories as global self-esteem,self-evaluations, and feelings of self-worth (Brown, 2014). These areconsidered as the meanings of self-esteem. Self-esteem has beendescribed as a personality variable that tends to capture the mannerin which individuals generally feel about themselves. This form ofself-esteem is known as global self-esteem. The concept ofself-esteem has also been used to refer to the manner in which aperson evaluates his/her different attributes and abilities (Brown,2014). In this case, the confidence that an individual tends to havein a certain action evaluates his/her self-esteem. Furthermore,self-esteem can be used to refer to the emotional states ofindividuals, which can result from a negative or positive outcome(Brown, 2014). In this case, it is perceived as the self-worth of aperson.

Importanceof Self-Esteem in Adults

Self-esteemhas been perceived crucial in adults because it helps them in havingconfidence with life and tackling issues that may seem to adverselyimpact them. In life, there are low and high moments that tend torestore and sway the confidence of individuals. Negative outcomesusually affect individuals differently depending on the level ofself-esteem that a person has (Snyder &amp Lopez, 2013). People whohave low self-esteem would have low moments during negative outcomesand may even become adversely impacted by the results, a move thatcan cause stress or depression. This is because the negative outcomesmay take them by surprise, and since they carry themselves asfailures, they cannot be in a position to contain the situation.However, for individuals that have high self-esteem, they can turnnegative outcomes into their success moments since they tend to bepositive in the way that they carry themselves.

Inadults, having good self-esteem is viewed as a ticket towards makingnoble choices concerning their mind and body. When individuals havethe mentality that they are important or they are worth, they arelikely to be independent and avoid following the crowd when it comesto making choices (Mruk, 2013). In instances, where their friends optto make dangerous decisions, such individuals are likely to restrainthemselves from following the decisions made by allies and wouldvalue selecting the best alternative that seems valuable to them.This is because if they know they are smart, they would understandthat they can be in a position to make independent decisions.

Also,self-esteem influences the manner in which adults interact with theother members of society. Since self-esteem entails the wayindividuals perceive themselves and how others evaluate them, it islikely to affect the manner in which adults interact with otherconstituents of community or society (Kernis, 2013). People who tendto have low self-esteem usually perceive themselves as lackingself-drive, which may have a negative influence on their interactionswith the rest of the society. However, those with high self-esteemare usually unstoppable in the interactions that they desire toinitiate. This offers them the confidence in initiating andprogressing interactions.

Furthermore,self-esteem is important in adults because it helps to determinepersonal happiness and achievement of desires. Depending on theself-esteem that a person has, it is possible to associate theindividual with either success or failure in life, as well as theattainment of the person (Snyder &amp Lopez, 2013). People who havehigh self-esteem are high achievers, which help them in living a lifeof happiness since they are in a position to control negativities intheir life. However, individuals who have low self-esteem are lowachievers and may tend to live unhappy lives because they do not havethe confidence to face challenges that they encounter.

Inaddition, self-esteem is important in adults because it makes aperson feel respected and proud, even when one makes a mistake.Self-esteem makes adults stand tall and respect their own worth,regardless of the situation. This is important for adults to remainhealthy since the mental conditions would always tend to be stable(Miller &amp Moran, 2012).


Inconclusion, self-esteem signifies an element of self-cognition thatmirrors an individual’s perceptions about himself/herself.Self-esteem is important in adults due to the several benefits thatit has. Indeed, the importance of self-esteem can be indicated asimmeasurable in adults because it tends to determine almost everyachievement in individuals. Therefore, it is critical to help adultsdevelop self-esteem.
